History of Zambian Coffee
Zambia’s association with coffee is relatively recent. The crop was introduced to the nation sometime in the 1950s through stocks of seeds from the surrounding countries of Tanzania and Kenya. But despite initial efforts, coffee cultivation in Zambia did not pick until the 1980s. Since then, Zambia has been steadily building up its profile though it has been slow going due to a number of intrinsic reasons. These include lack of infrastructure as well as the know-how for coffee cultivation.

The coffee production
In terms of the volume of coffee produced in Zambia, in the last couple of years alone there has been a significant increase. Between 2016 and 2018, Zambia coffee production has increased by about 1400 tonnes to total a respectable 2300 tonnes.
This increase has been made possible due to the growing awareness amongst farmers about the premium pricing that can be obtained for their coffee yields in the global markets. With this in mind, about 35% of the Zambian coffee produced are targeted at the specialty coffee market. This is expected to fetch higher prices for their high-quality African Arabica yields.
The biggest setback to coffee production in Zambia is the lack of infrastructure in place to support the initiative. The sector needs long term financing to ensure the establishment of proper farms and processing mills with adequate technology to produce high quality Arabica. The lack of financing to the small-scale coffee farmers is a hindrance that prevents hem from engaging in more widespread coffee cultivation.
Additionally, the fact that coffee takes a longer time to produce from planting to harvesting acts as another reason that makes Zambian farmers wary. While the long-term rewards may be high, it requires patience for them to show and initial investments can be quite high too. Most small-scale farmers in Zambia cannot afford to wait so long for their yields to bring in the profits.
The complex flavor
The best Zambian coffee presents a pleasant cocktail of flavor combinations that is characteristic of the East African Arabica beans. Most Zambian coffees tend towards a medium body that is perfectly balanced by bright acidity. The Falcon Zambia, on the other hand, has a fuller body with the trademark Zambian acidity that is at once bright and soft.
This is in contrast to the higher acidity prevalent in other famous African Arabica varieties.
