Intelligentsia Frequency Blend - 12 oz - Medium Roast, Direct Trade, Whole Bean Coffee
  • THE BLEND - It’s a harmonious composition of pulped-natural Brazilian coffee and fully washed Zambian coffee that changes seasonally depending on what is fresh and tasting great. Hand-picked coffee cherries from family owned and operated farms are de-pulped (the flesh of the fruit is stripped away from the seed) and dried on patios in the sun and finished in temperature-regulated gentle mechanical driers
  • FLAVOR PROFILE - Frequency Blend’s flavor profile is simple, yet refined: the Brazil component contributes a smooth body and predominant note of milk chocolate, with the washed Zambia adding an accent of lemongrass, pineapple, and breakfast tea. It’s what we refer to as a “chuggable” coffee: a well-balanced blend that’s enjoyable on it's own, or with a little added milk if that’s your preference.
  • WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT - We didn't adopt Direct Trade practices because it’s a trendy way to do business; we introduced the concept to the coffee industry. Our commitment to Direct Trade allows us to cut out unnecessary importers and exporters, and enables us to truly partner with our growers. We meticulously collect data, insights, and best practices from all of our growing partners and share them to improve overall quality.
  • OUR PROMISE - We know you take your coffee seriously and you order from us because you like the best cup of coffee you can get, so if there is ever a point where you are unsatisfied, please reach out to us! We want to make sure you are getting the freshness and quality you deserve

Zambian Coffee

History of Zambian Coffee

Zambia’s association with coffee is relatively recent. The crop was introduced to the nation sometime in the 1950s through stocks of seeds from the surrounding countries of Tanzania and Kenya. But despite initial efforts, coffee cultivation in Zambia did not pick until the 1980s. Since then, Zambia has been steadily building up its profile though it has been slow going due to a number of intrinsic reasons. These include lack of infrastructure as well as the know-how for coffee cultivation.

In recent years, coffee production in Zambia has picked up though it is still nowhere near as high as the more prolific coffee producing African nations. But while high quality coffee Zambian is still hard to come by due to underdeveloped processing techniques, there have been some innovations on that front. Coffee developers have cupped the Falcon Zambia which received a AAA rating and has tested very well with sample customers in Europe and America.

Zambia is a comparatively smaller country with a tropical climate and high terrain. There are high altitude plateaus, hills, and mountains scattered throughout the country which provides ample land and climate suitable for coffee farming. Thus, coffee farming in Zambia is spread throughout the country rather than being related to certain regions as seen in most other coffee producing nation around the world.

Why Zambian coffee?

As the most widely consumed caffeinated drink in the world, coffee comes in many varieties in order to cater to its diverse clientele. Both coffee lovers and coffee developers are always on the look out to try out something new and innovative with existing brews and blends. After all, even you have a favorite coffee type, it is always nice to try out new varieties in case you stumble into something you really like.

If you are one such coffee lover who has tried out just about most of the regular single source and blends, Zambian coffee might have something for you. As a less known coffee source, Zambia is bound to offer you a new experience with its quintessentially East African flavors that are also distinctly unique in their own way. The many features of these beans that make them unique and something worth trying out will be discussed in the following sections.

The climate and terrain

Zambia is a landlocked country situated on the central African plateau which ranges in height between 1000 and 1600 meters above sea level. Most parts of Zambia are situated at an average height of 1200m due to the abundance of high-altitude plateaus and hills that are spread throughout its length. This elevation accords the entire nation a moderate climate in the higher regions despite the country generally having a tropical climate.

It is this elevation and the moderate climate that is characteristic of such heights that form the perfect backdrop for coffee cultivation. Due to the presence of such climactic features that support coffee plants throughout the country, coffee farming is also carried out all over Zambia. These ventures are undertaken in small farms as well as in bigger estates.

The coffee production

In terms of the volume of coffee produced in Zambia, in the last couple of years alone there has been a significant increase. Between 2016 and 2018, Zambia coffee production has increased by about 1400 tonnes to total a respectable 2300 tonnes.

This increase has been made possible due to the growing awareness amongst farmers about the premium pricing that can be obtained for their coffee yields in the global markets. With this in mind, about 35% of the Zambian coffee produced are targeted at the specialty coffee market. This is expected to fetch higher prices for their high-quality African Arabica yields.

The setbacks

The biggest setback to coffee production in Zambia is the lack of infrastructure in place to support the initiative. The sector needs long term financing to ensure the establishment of proper farms and processing mills with adequate technology to produce high quality Arabica. The lack of financing to the small-scale coffee farmers is a hindrance that prevents hem from engaging in more widespread coffee cultivation.

Additionally, the fact that coffee takes a longer time to produce from planting to harvesting acts as another reason that makes Zambian farmers wary. While the long-term rewards may be high, it requires patience for them to show and initial investments can be quite high too. Most small-scale farmers in Zambia cannot afford to wait so long for their yields to bring in the profits.

The complex flavor

The best Zambian coffee presents a pleasant cocktail of flavor combinations that is characteristic of the East African Arabica beans. Most Zambian coffees tend towards a medium body that is perfectly balanced by bright acidity. The Falcon Zambia, on the other hand, has a fuller body with the trademark Zambian acidity that is at once bright and soft.

This is in contrast to the higher acidity prevalent in other famous African Arabica varieties. This is further complemented by the floral aroma that each cup of Zambian brew exudes along with the wines tones that burst forth exuberantly in every mouthful. All this come together to make the Zambian coffee experience a unique and rich one.

Rising profile

While Zambian coffee may not be as prolific as its other long-established African brethren, its profile is definitely rising in specialty coffee circles. Most coffee lovers who have sampled the high-quality Zambian batches have only had positive things to say about it. This is easily one coffee source that we will be keeping an eye on for future developments and so should you.
