Ugandan Coffees

Located in the Great Lakes region of Central Africa, Uganda is the original home of the varietal Robusta or coffee canephora var. robusta. But now, Arabica production has also boomed here over a period of ten years. Uganda produces outstanding wet-processed Arabicas such as Kent, SL 28, SL 14, and Typica. However, the main production continues to be Robusta, which is used as cheap fillers in blends and instant coffees. Ugandan coffees have earned a great name for themselves among coffee lovers and roasters.

Ugandan Coffees

Why are Ugandan coffees so special?

Uganda offers a superb location for growing coffee plants. The country possesses abundantly fertile land along with volcanic soil to the west and east. It even receives plenty of rainfall. In Uganda, certain regions boast two harvest seasons, October-February and April-June.

Here, coffee production takes place at 2,300 meters above sea level in most areas. Due to this, they experience cooler temperatures. These climate conditions produce more complex coffees. In Uganda, wet-processing is quite common. Along with that, one can even find natural processed coffees too. These processed coffees range from high-quality and specialty grade beans to low-quality and defective ones.

Due to abundant rain and sunshine, Ugandan coffees develop full-flavored coffees because of the slow development. These coffees offer a wide range of flavor profiles from floral to sun-dried tomatoes.

Arabica-growing regions in Uganda

Uganda is well-renowned for Robusta coffee varieties. Robusta is a native species that grow wild in rainforests of this country. But Arabicas are also grown in three regions here. These Arabica-growing regions include West Nile, Mount Elgon, and the Rwenzori Mountains. Each of these growing regions is unique when it comes to production methods and diverse coffee profiles.

West Nile

Located on the northwest side of Uganda, West Nile has farms with elevations around 1300-1600 meters above the sea level. In these multi-generational ranches, native trees like banyan trees are exercised as shade. Coffees from West Nile are known due to their citrus profiles. Generally, coffees are washed processed here.

Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon is the oldest volcano of East Africa. It lies on the eastern border of Uganda with Kenya. In this region, coffee ranches can be found on the sides of the mountain, where they receive shade from the forest cover and moisture from sheer water gullies. At higher altitudes, harvests begin around July and end around February. At lower altitudes, harvests take place from June to December.

In Uganda, the norm is to go for organic farming. On expertise farms, growers pick coffee cherries with their hands before washed processed these beans. It becomes really difficult for farmers to transport coffee to the mill because of steep terrains.

Grown on the western slopes of Mt. Elgon, Bugisu coffees are well admired for their wine-like and fruity coffees. The plant varietal coffee arabica var. bugishu has a distinctive aroma and known for its clean flavor. These Ugandan coffees have a lighter body and lower complexity.

Commonly, coffees taste citrusy and sweet along with top notes of figs and raisins. You will find these kinds of coffees in washing stations like Kapchorwa and Gibuzali.

Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountains are even called as the mountains of the moon. These mountains lie along the southwestern border of Uganda with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Here, coffees are grown on the mountain slopes at altitudes around 1,500-2,300 meters above the sea level. The climate conditions for growing coffee are apt here along with nitrogen-rich and volcanic soil. In this coffee growing region, natural processing methods are used, although washed processing ones can also be seen here.

Tasting Notes of Ugandan Coffee

A good and fresh brewed cup of Bugishu coffee from Uganda reveals cupping notes as same as the preferably East African Coffee’s winey acidity. Ugandan coffees have a rich texture with a sweet flavor of chocolate. As stated earlier, coffees from Uganda have a lighter body and lower complexity.

Robusta coffees from the Lake Victorian basin benefit from higher elevations in that region. In addition to that, clay-rich soil suits coffees really well. Due to these factors, Ugandan coffees from this region have higher acidity as compared to other lower-altitude developed Robusta. It would be best to enjoy a great cup of coffee from this region.

In general, Ugandan coffees have low to medium acidity, a high to bold body, and a strong to high flavor. So, these coffees offer a reliable and honest cup of coffee without excessive sweetness, acidity, and fruitiness. Ugandan coffees are best for straight Espresso drinkers due to their relatively low-acid choice with a full mouth and thick feel. Coffee aficionados who like their coffee black will love the complex, rich, and bold taste of Ugandan coffees.

Growing of Green Coffee

The harvest period for growing Arabica coffees is October to February. For Robusta, harvests take place all around the year with peaking from November to February. Once the crops are harvested, coffee beans are either naturally processed or naturally washed. Locally, farmers use the term “drugars” for the former process while “wugars” for the latter.

In Uganda, one can even find wild Robusta coffee trees. This is so because of the appropriate climate conditions. Being indigenous, Robustas remain the largest exported varietal of coffee in Uganda. This volume even boasts the second largest exported varietal in the whole world. Ugandan coffees are marked with grades “A” and “AA”.

When it comes to coffee production, Uganda is the seventh largest producer in the world. It is really amazing for such a small country to yield such a number. It produces robusta varietal on a large basis along with special Arabica coffees. Things have definitely changed over some years. Ugandan coffees have won several awards in the roasting championships of coffee.

So, go for Ugandan coffees if you want to enjoy a great cup of coffee. As in the cup, Ugandan coffees bring ripe fruit tones and satin body along with a buttery finish and top notes of red berry. What else you need after this!
