A cup of pure Tanzanian coffee will not taste the same as a flat bean coffee, even though they might come from the same tree. Coffee from Tanzania is known for its acidity and brightness. It is medium-bodied and is best enjoyed at a medium roast.

Apart from the rich and chocolaty flavor, the coffee also has hints of dark fruits like black currant. You will also be able to finish the coffee with a soft and sweet note and expect hints of pineapple, coconut, citrus fruit and hints of floral notes. It might be very similar to the Kenyan coffee, but has a more buttery and creamy body and a lingering aftertaste.


Coffee beans were first bought over to Tanzania from Ethiopia during the 16th century. Before the arrival of the German colonizers, coffee was primarily utilized as a stimulant. The cultivation of coffee beans was under the strict control and regulations of the tribal leaders. After colonization, the production of coffee began to rise.

The aroma of the Tanzanian coffee exhibits a brown bread sweetness at times and a rustic note. The after taste remains with a slight sensation of the local African wilderness. Its acidity levels are a bit more muted as compared to Kenyan coffee. It has a milder body and less consistency. While the coffee beans lack the acidity and the fruity hints, they still shine very brightly. The ground of this coffee has a sweet molasses fragrance that has hints of apple fruit.

The overall green coffee production consistency and quality in Tanzania are far behind the Kenyan coffee production quality. But the winey acidity of the Tanzanian coffee has been compared well to Arabian coffees and other African coffees as well. Coffee beans from Tanzania are wet-processed.

Coffee growing regions in Tanzania

The most important coffee growing areas in Tanzania are Pare (high plateau between Lake Nyassa and Lake Tanganyika), Oldeani (in the Arusha region), Arusha (Meru), Songea (the capital of the Ruvuma region in southeastern Tanzania), and the Moshi district (base of Mt. Kilimanjaro).

Coffee beans that are grown in the southern region on Tanzania have better drying conditions and transportation access, which play a very advantageous hand. This happens because coffee batches from Tanzania tend to become defective from being steamed artificially in the shipping containers.

Out of all the places, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, and Moshi are three of the most distinctive coffee producing in Tanzania. Some of the other less prominent regions include Mwanza, Bukoba, Kagera, Kigoma, Rukwa, Manyara, Tanga, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mara, etc.

The tartness of the fruit contrasts well with the coffee’s rich tones. It has been estimated that about 500,000 farming families in the region are engaged in coffee production and depends on it for their daily wages. Coffee also comprises 20% of the total export earnings of Tanzania. Like many different places in the world, some of the harvest coffee beans are peaberry, which has a single bean per fruit than the typical two. The single beans are separated and sold as premium quality.

Tanzania is the third largest producer of coffee in Africa. It produces more than 1% of the world’s total Arabica coffee. The Arabica coffee grown here qualifies as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) and Strictly High Grown (SHG), which means that the coffee-growing plantations are located about 1,500 meters above sea level. Most of the coffee beans are exported by brokers and sold to distributors and wholesalers.
