Puerto Rican Coffee
History of Puerto Rican Coffee
During the time of the Spanish ruling of Puerto Rico, coffee was first brought as a small cash crop from Martinique and used to be distributed at a local level. But the situation changed by the 18th century when the island started to produce over a million pounds of coffee every year. By the time it was the 19th century, Puerto Rico was ranked 7th in terms of coffee production all over the world. One major reason for the rapid growth was the tactics brought by settlers from Europe to Puerto Rico.
However, things went a bit downhill by the year 1898 when the island was taken over the United States and the focus shifted from coffee to sugar cane. But again, we can see a revival of coffee production in recent years with the reopening of the age-old hacienda estates and more areas being used only for the production of coffee.
The area of Cordillera Central has seen a growth of more coffee farms because the soil contains volcanic nutrients. This is very congenial for the growth and nurture of the excellent quality of the coffee. The coffee thus produced is gourmet in nature and can be called to be one of the finest.
Areas used for coffee production
Along the length and breadth of Puerto Rico, the coffee farms are spread. The altitude level ranges from between 2400-2780 feet in the mountain ranges that lie to the west and center. This spans across areas starting from Rincon till Orocovis. There are other places like Ponce which is situated at higher altitudes and is, therefore, even more, conducive for the farming of coffee.
The most productive areas for coffee are Lares, San Sebastian, and Las Marias which lie to the northwest of the central region of the country. Multiple factors like cloud cover, change of climate, increased cost of production, political upheavals, etc have affected the coffee industry in recent years. Additionally, in the area of Cordillera Central, newer coffee farms have emerged because of the better quality of soil and the great climate.
Types of Puerto Rican coffee
Most of the coffee produced in Puerto Rico is produced from Arabica. Some of the well-known brands are Pacas, Bourbon, Catimor, and Typica. One-third of the total amount of coffee that is produced is consumed locally itself. Coqui, Rioja, Café Rico, Yauco Selecto, Adjuntas, Alto Grande Super Premium, and Crema are some of the other variants of Puerto Rican coffee that you will find locally. The Alto Grande Super Premium coffee is the one that enjoys the most popular on the island.
How do you serve Puerto Rican coffee?
You must be familiar with the standard ways of serving coffee. So, let’s take espresso. A Puerto Rican Espresso and an Italian one is not very different. Though, a Puerto Rican Coffee is at times referred to by the name pocillo which is a more colloquial term. This refers to the cups of small size in which the Espresso is served.
Puerto Rican Coffee can also be had in the form of a Cortadito. If you are accustomed to Cuban coffee then you will know what a Cortadito is. This is very similar to what you call a cortado. However, a Cortadito has one extra layer of hot milk.
Want to go for something for basic and traditional? Then you can try the café con leche which is just like a basic latte but when it is made with Puerto Rican coffee and served locally, then it comes with milk in a huge cup. Recipes of this latte differ but any of them will involve a lot of milk for sure.
Problems faced by Puerto Rican Coffee
Even after having such large production of coffee, the people on Puerto Rico still suffer from a deficiency of coffee at a local level. The demand is so high that enough coffee is not produced to cater to the needs of the people. Café Salome was a company that was established in the year 2016. Their aim was to supply coffee of a very high quality that has been carefully picked from the farms. The CEO of this company expresses his opinion about the dearth of enough coffee in Puerto Rico.
All of this goes to show that Puerto Rican Coffee is definitely much in demand due to its rich flavor, unique taste, and the hand-crafted process. This undoubtedly makes the coffee a bit expensive but it is worth it. However, the fact remains that more assistance in terms of labor and infrastructure needs to be made available in the country to boost the growth of the coffee industry.
If compared with the neighboring Colombian coffee, probably Puerto Rican coffee will not win many votes. But this does not mean that the quality of this coffee is any lesser. With great mountain weather and the volcanic quality of the soil, Puerto Rico produces some of the freshest and rich coffee that you have ever had.
Whenever you visit Puerto Rico, make sure you sit and relax with a cup of their choicest coffee in one of the cafes. If you cannot visit the country, then you could even place an order online through many sites that supply freshly grounded Puerto Rican coffee to your home. So, what are you waiting for?
