Esmeralda Private Geisha Collection 8oz,227g
  • 8oz,227g bag of Hacienda Esmeralda Private Geisha Whole Beans Collection
  • The very top chateaux are fabulous coffee in their own right, still costly but a relative bargain. Lafite-Rothschild has its Lafite Rothschild Carruades de Lafite; Château Latour its Les Forts de Latour. These wines would be great in anyone's book, but they are withheld, often for a tiny detail, from being in the rarified top lot. The same holds true for Esmeralda Private Collection Geisha. This is a wonderful coffee, exhibiting much of the same lovely jasmine, floral and lemony tones witnessed
  • Competition for the coffee is fierce and prices go very high. This year a new world price record was set for a natural process lot attaining $601 a pound! Without considering this record price most of the auctioned coffee is in the $50 to $200 range and needs to be at least twice that by the time it roasted and sold. Esmeralda can go for $5 to $20 when sold by the cup.
  • Roasting Notes: We artisan roasted medium light. This will best preserve the delicate Geisha citrus and fruit flavors, which can be masked if dark roasted
  • Excellent gift for any coffee aficionado

Panama Coffee

History of Coffee Production in Panama

Panama’s association with coffee started when with the European settlers bringing coffee to the region in the 19th century. Almost all the coffee produced in the country comes from the province of Chiriqui. Within this region, there are three major places that account for a majority of the nation’s coffee production. These include Boquete, which has oldest coffee farms best known for its Geisha coffee, the Volcan area situated on the slopes of the Volcan Baru, and the Renacimiento region.

With a comparatively smaller region with the suitable natural resources that support coffee cultivation, Panama’s coffee yield is not very high. In the years of lower yield, the amount of total coffee produced in Panama in a single year is comparable to the amount produced by individual plantations alone in big coffee producing nations such as Brazil. But what the country lacks in volume of yield, it makes up for in value and quality.

The coffee farms in Panama are located at an average height ranging between 1200 and 1600 meters which is the ideal height for cultivation. The suitable altitude along with other climatic factors ensured that coffee production in Panama has thrived for over a century since its introduction. In recent years, the volume of coffee produced has seen a slight decline. But Panama has done well to mitigate its setbacks to develop quite a following for its product.

Why Panama Coffee?

Coffee lovers around the world today have access to a lot of variety when it comes to choosing a coffee. This is thanks to the numerous big coffee chains owned and run by big corporations as well as specialty coffee shops managed by individual business owners. As such, it is only natural that every new entrant in to the overcrowded coffee market would try to bring you something new and exotic.

Panama coffee is one such less known coffee variety that hardcore coffee aficionados swear by. There are many factors that contribute to making this coffee as high quality and unique as it is. So, let us take a closer look at the many special features of this Panama coffee and the reasons as to why you should try it.

The complex flavor profile

The main reason for the dedicated following of Panama coffee that results in its high pricing is the unique and rich flavor profile it presents. The Geisha coffee fruit comes in an elongated shape and has a light body accompanied by bright acidity. This results in brews that are perfectly balanced and light in the mouth. The flavors contain a unique combination of honey, dark cocoa, and citrus notes which complimented by the aroma of jasmine. All these notes and undertones combine to lend this coffee a profile that is complex in character.

The growing conditions

Coffee cultivation in Panama is mostly situated in the highlands of the Chiriqui province in the three regions of Boquete, Volcan, and Renacimiento. The soil composition of these areas is mostly volcanic in nature which makes the soil nutrient rich. The high mineral content combined with the altitude, temperature and sunlight received in the plantations make for the perfect coffee growing conditions.

Additionally, the mountainsides see winds blowing in from the north which brings with them called the bajareque. These winds and mists create a climate that acts as a massive air conditioner naturally regulating the temperature to a degree that is even more suited to the maturing coffee fruits. They serve to slow down the ripening process of the coffee fruits which lends this coffee its characteristic sweetness and balanced complexity.

Supportive infrastructure

Ever since the advent of the serious pursuit of coffee farming in Panama, steps were taken to set up supportive infrastructures to help the process along. Panama has a long history of attracting forest investment in its coffee farms that help keep the farms up and running. Many of these farms are even equipped with processing mills that are capable of both wet and dry methods.

Furthermore, well connected transport facilities are also in place for those plantations not having on-site access to mills. This ensures that the freshly picked coffee fruits reach the mills for processing in the shortest time span possible. The transport of processed coffee beans to potential sellers and exporters is also hastened by it.

The coffee varieties

Of the total amount of coffee grown in Panama, 82% are of the Arabica variety which is really high quality and fetches a high price in the international market. The rest of the 18% comprise of Robusta beans which are also in high demand in specialty blends due to its high caffeine content.

Apart from the Geisha variety of coffee, Panama also produces several other strains of coffee that are less known but nevertheless of high quality. These include Caturra, Bourbon, Catuai, San Ramon, Typica, and Mundo Novo.

The processing methods

The processing methods applied to the coffee cherries determine the quality of the coffee bean yield as well as helps refine their flavor profile. Panama coffee is produced in smaller batches due to the smaller scale of production. This ensures that each batch gets close attention through the process of cherry-picking extending on to the processing.

Panama coffee is for the most part of the green variety that has been subjected to wet processing. This process constitutes washing the cherries to clean away the dirt particles followed by drying for eight days. This unique method is a major factor in the coffee achieving its characteristic profile which makes it so sought after.
