Nicaraguan Coffee

History of Nicaraguan Coffee

Nicaragua is a tiny South American country that derives much of its economic resources from coffee cultivation and export. Coffee arrived on the shores of Nicaragua sometime in the middle of the 19th century when it was still a colony. Since then, coffee cultivation in this country has come quite far and has consequently brought the country along with it through civil war and natural disasters.

As a country, Nicaragua has seen multiple conquests and colonization but through it all Nicaraguans from various tribes and ethnicities have resisted and maintained their dignity. The most recent of such political strife was a civil war that raged through the eighties and devastated the social fabric. This was followed by the onslaught of a major hurricane in 1998 that ravaged the nation. Through it all, the coffee industry stood steadfastly as a steady source of income to thousands of rural farmers.

Coffee cultivation accounts for a significant chunk of the nation’s GDP and creates employment opportunity for almost 300,000 people directly or indirectly. According to data, there are about 45,000 families engaged in coffee farming through small farms owned privately. This contributes close to $140,000,000 to the economy of Nicaragua on a yearly basis and also helps sustain the biodiversity of the Nicaraguan natural ecosystem.

Why Nicaraguan Coffee?

In Nicaragua, more land is devoted to coffee plantation than any other crop. In a country that has such a long and rich tradition of coffee cultivation and where the crop forms such an important part of the nation’s economy and ecosystem, the quality of the output is bound to be good.

There are many unique features of Nicaraguan coffee that make it a must try for at least once for all coffee lovers. Let us take a close look at the features that make this coffee special and the various advantages of Nicaraguan coffee.

The flavor profile

The most attractive feature of Nicaraguan coffee is the complex flavor profile it presents. These coffee beans are often described are bright, citrusy, and delicate along with a fragrant aroma. The most recognizable undertones contained in Nicaraguan coffee is that of nuts and vanilla that perfectly complements the fruity notes and the inherent taste of coffee.

Nicaraguan coffee is moderately acidic which is the degree of acidity that most people around the world have a preference for. The medium body of the coffee is accompanied by a caramel sweetness that further raises its profile.

The climate and ecosystem

Coffee plantations in Nicaragua are mostly situated on the highlands in and around Matagalpa, Jintotega, and Nueva Segovia. Additionally, the central highlands located towards the north and east of Esteli and the volcanic areas near Jinotepe see a majority of the coffee produced in the nation. Most of these places are located at an average height of ranging between 1100m and 1600m above sea level. This elevation offers the best temperatures and sunlight for coffee plants.

The coffee plantations in Nicaragua are planted by applying the shade-grown method which constitutes growing coffee alongside bigger trees. These trees provide the delicate coffee plants and fruits with the protection it requires from the direct glare of the sun. This type of farming also serves to protect the soil quality on the hillsides by ensuring that there is enough tree cover to prevent indiscriminate soil erosion.

Coffee cultivation culture

Coffee cultivation in Nicaragua is carried out by small holding farms owned and run by individual family units. Data estimates that more than 45,000 households in this nation subsist on coffee farming. This is a significant number in a country with a population of about six million people where half the population is unemployed.

A significant portion of Nicaraguan coffee is produced by small holdings that are managed by the cooperative system. But there also exists many medium to larger sized estates that work as self-sustained agro-industrial units that have their own coffee bean processing mills. Some of these even have the capacity of exporting their own beans without the need for any cooperative intermediaries.

Such plantations maintain their own labor force on their premises, providing housing and employment to hundreds and even thousands of workers. Most of these workers, be they farmers, coffee fruit pickers or even people working the processing mills, are drawn from neighboring as well as far-flung rural areas. A majority of them live in extreme poverty and sub-par working conditions.

Conservation of biodiversity

Over the past few decades, Nicaragua has seen indiscriminate felling of trees that lead to loss of biodiversity in the form of both flora and fauna. Loss of tree cover often also results in the loss of habit for an entire ecosystem of animals that lived in the deforested regions. The Nicaraguan government set up agencies that oversaw the introduction of coffee farming techniques that doubled up as conservation measures to prevent further loss of biodiversity.

Shade grown coffee farms and plantations necessitate the planting of thousands of trees across farms throughout the rural countryside of Nicaragua. These trees not only marvelously fulfill their main purpose of providing shade to the coffee plants growing alongside, but also prevent soil erosion and loss of topsoil by rooting into it.

This serves to soil quality which ensures the continuation of the soil’s ability to support the coffee plants. Additionally, it also serves to provide tree cover in deforested regions where forests were cut down to convert more land into profitable coffee plantations. This consequently preserves the fauna of the region by serving as a habitat for birds and animals.
