Flavored Coffee

Background information on flavored coffee

The process of adding flavors to coffee that is distinctly different from the existing flavor profile inherent in the beans serves two main purposes. The first is to enhance the taste of coffee by adding more variety and complexity to its existing profile. This can be achieved by the infusion of complimentary flavors of lemon, chocolate or spices.

The second purpose served by flavoring is the masking of the damage caused to the coffee beans by natural processes such as aging or oxidation due to packaging defects. A lot of coffee lovers suffer from health constraints that prevent them from consuming caffeine. This leads to many coffee makers offering decaf coffee that has to undergo the decaffeinating process which can also lead to loss of original flavors. The addition of artificial flavors, whether synthetic or organic, serves to ensure that consumers of decaf coffee too can enjoy a flavorful cup.

The inherent flavors in coffee differ from one type to another while its development occurs through the cultivation, roasting, and processing. This implies that there can be slight variations in flavor profile even in coffee grown in the same region depending on the consistency or lack of it in its processing. Any further addition of flavors to different varieties of coffee will have unique results due to the flavor combinations achieved from altering the original profile of the coffee.

The best coffee beans suited to flavoring

Every coffee variety comprises of certain unique characteristics that are distinctive to them. These include such features as aromatic oils, sugars, caffeine compounds minerals, starch, acid, etc. The result of any further addition of flavors will depend on how each of the aforementioned features and components reacts with the added flavoring compounds. As such, there are some coffee beans that are naturally more predisposed to added flavors.

One such coffee type that can produce the best flavored coffees are the high-quality Arabica beans sourced from high altitude plantations located around the world. The lower acidic content of this coffee combined with low inherent bitterness makes for a good base to retain added flavors without reacting in unforeseen ways. High quality Arabica contains rich flavor profiles that are also milder in comparison to Robusta beans, thus, allowing for better retention of added flavors.

Flavors coffee is achieved either by adding flavors artificially to single source Arabica beans or by blending different types of Arabica beans. Without exception, the best quality flavored coffee is composed of 100% Arabica coffee. These beans can be sourced from a number of coffee growing countries such as Ethiopia which the origin of the Arabica, Kenya, Costa Rica, Yemen, Sumatra, Colombia, etc.

The coffee flavoring compounds

Coffee flavoring compounds are synthetic chemicals that taste like naturally occurring and known food materials such as fruits or nuts. A majority of the oils that constitute such flavoring agents are extracted from cocoa, vanilla beans, berries, and nuts like almond. Other flavoring agents include spices such as clove, ginger, chicory, and cinnamon.

Flavors manufactured industrially include compounds such as 2, 4-dimethyl-5-acetylthiazole and2, 4-dimethyl-5-acetylthiazole. While the former introduces musty and woody flavors into the coffee, the latter is used to achieve a potato or peanut flavor. These flavors are used to mask the unpleasant bitterness inherent in coffee as a lot of coffee consumers prefer their drink to be creamy and sweet.

Solvents are used in order to blends the different artificially added flavors if more than one flavoring agent is being used. These solvents are dissolvable and removable during the coffee drying process. Any solvents used in the flavoring process needs to be approved by regulatory bodies so as to prevent any harm to the consumers. The chemicals in the solvents are also carefully processed to ensure that they do not react harmfully with processing units or packaging materials.

Homemade flavors

While most of the flavoring agents discussed in the previous sections were industrial grade chemicals, there are a few flavors that can be added to your coffee at home. These homemade flavors can either be made from spices or constitute extracts of fruits. The addition of spices to enhance the flavor of the coffee you want to brew is a natural process.

Spices such as tangawizi, ginger, black pepper, clove, nutmeg, cardamom, and cinnamon are commonly found ingredients in most kitchens. These can be grounded into a fine paste and added to your coffee grounds before you brew them. Some people are also known to add spices to their drink after the brewing process is over. In Ethiopia the most commonly used spice to extraneously flavor coffee is ginger, whereas in Mexico and the Middle East, it is cinnamon and cardamom respectively.

The addition of flavors through extracts is the second homemade flavoring method. These extracts can be added in your desired quantity depending upon how intense you want the resulting flavors to be. These flavoring agents can be pure oils extracted from fruits or artificial ones that exhibit the same flavors as the pure extracts. Some of the most commonly used extracts for coffee drinks include orange, apple, vanilla, raspberry, chocolate, peppermint, etc.

These different extracts can also be added in various combinations to achieve complimentary flavor combinations such as hazelnut and chocolate, orange and vanilla, or rum and butter. Lattes, syrups, and creams prepared at home are some other flavoring agents you can use to add extra character to your coffee drink. While flavoring at home one must take not to add these agents in small quantities to avoid excessive flavoring.
